How to Choose a Lightweight Camping Stove
This is a general overview, but it is recommended that you do your own research. I have linked websites I have found useful.
Weight
430-600 grams
When looking at lightweight camping stoves, make sure you pay attention to whether or not the weight includes the full system: the stove, pot, and fuel. With all these items included, you should expect a weight of around 430-600 grams total.
Fuel Efficiency
7-10 litres per 100g canister
The fuel efficiency of a camping stove depends on the stove’s design, the type of fuel it uses, and the size of the canister. Propane is the most popular fuel since it holds high pressure at low temperatures. Other fuels include denatured alcohol and ethanol which are clean-burning fuels. A standard 220g canister can last 2–4 hours of continuous cooking and a small 100g canister is often enough for a solo weekend backpacking trip. Bring enough fuel to boil one liter of water per person, per meal.
Boil Time
3-5 minutes / litre
The fastest stoves on the market boil a litre of water in just over 3 minutes, whereas the slower stoves take up to 5 minutes. Just beware that the faster a stove boils water, the more likely it is to be less fuel efficient. Also note that the boil times listed on a website are in no wind conditions. Look for reviews of stoves in high wind conditions.
Ease of Use
Push ignitor recommended
The most important thing on your system is to ensure there is a push ignitor that instantly lights the stove. This will save you having to lug around a extra lighter or tons of matches (though carry a few just in case). Make sure the ignitor is reliable though!
